Spark Joy: Introducing Neat Method, Vancouver’s Professional Home Organizer
Photography by Celine Richardson
Balancing pregnancy and a new home is not easy. On top of undergoing extreme mental and physical changes, my husband and I have been working around the clock trying to organize our home in preparation for our little one’s arrival (can you believe we are just shy of 15 weeks left?!). Taking advantage of the time we do have, we wanted to make our sanctuary organized and easy to maintain.
Obviously that’s easier said than done! For me, the most daunting part about moving is always the purging of the old and the organization of the new. Sometimes it just makes me want to take a nap and forget about the mess! Luckily, I stumbled across NEAT Method Vancouver, a luxury home organizing company, franchised by a lovely woman named Sarah, to lend a big helping hand.
Sarah and her team jumped in to help tackle my most used room of the house: our kitchen. Not going to lie, my pantry is a black hole of unique spices, different-sized pastas, multiple types of rice and so much more. You name it, and I’ve got it. Unfortunately it’s a huge mission to find the ingredients I’m looking for. Every. Single. Day.
The Process
There’s a method to the madness of organizing in a way where you - and others - can easily understand where each item lives. I love how NEAT Method prioritized optimizing my particular lifestyle. With neatness, I no longer over purchase something I currently have, am mindful of what I buy, and everything is easily and visually accessible for my everyday needs. Having an organized space even saves me money in the long run, as I can see everything clearly and use items up before they expire.
BEFORE
“It always gets worse before it gets better!”
First, the NEAT Method team pulled everything out of the cupboards, drawers and shelves. During that time, they kept in mind of all the items as they were moved, chucking and noting down the ones that were expired or needed replacing.
Categorize!
As we laid out my stock on the kitchen island, simple categories became apparent. Clearly, I love pasta and snacks! Grouping things into general categories (like baking needs, spices, dry boxed goods, etc) gave me an understanding of how much I really have of each family of items, which is essential for the next point.
Understanding your prime real estate
We wiped down my drawers, shelves, and cupboards and took a step back. We talked about where and how I’ll use the space the most and took note of the real estate surrounding it. The NEAT Method team also had me reflect on where I might need certain items to be more accessible. If you’re looking to organize your kitchen, mull over questions like: Do you have kids, and need to consider their safety or ability to reach certain things? Do you drink lots of tea? Make smoothies often? Bake? Then organize them into their storage areas based on your unique hierarchy of needs.
Label
Once we found a home for each item, it was time for labelling! Since I spend so much time in the kitchen, I trust myself to know where everything goes. It’s when others are in the space that I need labels to maintain the system in the long run.
AFTER
...And ta-da! My personal chaos is now a place I can happily create from!
NEAT Method Vancouver is great for everyone and every space. They customize their prices and packages for each unique space based on your budget and needs. Before install day, Sarah spent an hour doing a consultation, to get to know me and my husband, and how we use our space. The result? Surprisingly, we have more space now!
