Interior Design Trends for Spring 2019

As an interior design/home decor fanatic, I’ve compiled my take on the design trends of 2019! Based on what I’ve seen popping up in showrooms, magazines and online, here’s what I’m looking forward to incorporating into my own home come springtime.

1. Plants at mixed levels

Adding a little green in your home gives it a zen-like touch, but this year, having them at varied heights (using garden stools, window ledges, planters, planters with legs) will give the plants a new sense of depth. Also, it’s great if you decide to have a plant corner in your home; to maximize small spaces!

2. Bold Black Bathrooms

Be bold with bathrooms! We decided to have a black powder room, and it’s not exactly the biggest bathroom either! With a little help of lighting, we used black venetian plaster (you can also use paint and/or wall paper) to give the bathroom a moody, sophisticated feel. The best part of black bathrooms is that it is so easy to style with colours & it contrasts so well with decor.

3. Art of Tidying Up with the #KonMari Method

Not sure if you all saw the Netflix show “Tidying up with Marie Kondo” - but we definitely have! Using her folding techniques, letting go items that don’t spark joy, and carefully categorizing items that we chose to keep in clear boxes, it gives your home another level of happiness & appreciation.

4. Bright Pops of Colour

A huge trend the past few years were to have bright whites & muted grays & creams. Now is the time to add a little pop of colour as it does the trick for the new year to make a space feel refreshed - the biggest colours I believe will be a hit are dusty pink, deep turquoises, terra cotta & mustard yellow.

5. Floral Walls & Textiles

Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking! But, this time… go big or go home! Large bold floral walls & textiles will be a HUGE hit - and it’s easy to tone it down (I know, I was afraid of colour too, let alone PATTERNS) with solid throws, small objects & decor. My favourite way to style with large patterns & prints is to use acrylic or glass objects!

6. Sustainability via Timelessness

Sustainability, less is more, timelessness & waste reduction is in! Fast fashion, single use plastics & easily disposable items are slowly becoming a thing of the past. This is less of a trend and more of a mindset, making conscious, people-planet-first decisions is a huge movement & I believe it’ll definitely continue as we grow more aware of what our carbon footprint is doing to the planet!

7. Mixed Materials & Textures

Local interior designer, Gillian Segal is championing this trend! But for her, she designs it as a lifestyle! Being bold in mixing materials & textiles elevates a space, and if done well, adds a level of sophistication. This modern, eclectic trend is definitely one of my favourites (and I believe it’s here to stay!)

8. Cozy, modern nooks

Cozy corners in your home gives it that extra homey feel. It allows you to be present & less digital. A private sanctuary is what we’re all about in 2019 for self care, self love & mental health. Add modern accent tables, decorative objects or even a curved couch will add that extra modern, yet livable touch.

9. Unique Art Pieces

Support local & small businesses! Add that extra art piece that goes the extra mile. Giving that finishing touch, art prints, vintage posters or local artwork styled with a thin frame & mounted onto a wall, or resting on a dresser gives that cherry on top in your home.

10. Airy & Architectural

Following the sustainability point - less is more! Marie Kondo mentioned that once you’ve decluttered your less loved items, you cherish the ones you chose to keep. Clean spaces such as library walls, bookshelves, floating shelves are great to display these items, but if done in a minimalistic way with a little styling, gives the space an airy feel. I also love how Nicole Cohen (image above) displayed her beloved items, yet kept the space clean so it shows off the bones & architecture of the home. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the space you live in has it’s own beauty without styling, so why not show that side too?

11. Light, Clean, Boho spaces for entertaining

Light muted floors have a great way of adding contrast to bright & dark furniture. The modern boho would love a cool rattan chair, flatweave rug & a plant as a finishing touch. This trend is for your entertainers & areas that can fit a few friends for a dinner party or for your family to cozy up to after dinner. The clean space gives your mindset a sense of calm, but the modern & boho touch gives it that extra positive energy a home can have.

So there you have it! The interior trends of Spring 2019! You don’t necessarily need a big budget to take them on—a lot of these ideas can be incorporated with simple updates here and there. How will you use these ideas to refresh your space?

With love,
